A vacation in tune with nature!
Loix is a peninsula within a peninsula, nestled between salt marshes and the ocean, as if lost in the middle of a wilderness capable of disorientating even the most curious camper. The salt marshes on the banks of the Fier d'Ars are a fine example.
Salt farming flourished on the peninsula in the early 15th century, and for a long time ensured the prosperity of the small port of Loix. Even today, some one hundred salt workers continue to harvest the white gold, the delicate flower of salt that rises to the surface of the marshes.

Loix's cultural heritage
A lover of terroir or cultural visits? Loix has plenty to satisfy your curiosity. You can discover La Verdonnais, one of the 13 remaining fish locks on the Ile de Ré, visit the church of Sainte Catherine and the tide mill on the little port, or take a stroll around the Grouin fort. Now converted into a home, the Grouin battery was built in 1742 on the foundations of an 18th-century military fortress.
For a change of pace, take advantage of your camping vacation to visit the Chèvrerie de Loix; the Quillet workshop, specializing in the conservation, restoration and binding of old documents; L'abeille de Ré, a traditional honey factory; and Loix & Savons, the only soap factory on the island of Ré to work with whole, natural donkey's milk.
There's no doubt about it, Loix is an authentic craft village that deserves to be visited for as long as possible.
