Visiting the Vauban fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré

The village owes its fame to its famous citadel, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Built opposite the Pertuis Breton in 1690 to protect the island against the English, the fortress housed an arsenal, food and gunpowder stores, barracks and officers’ quarters… and the entire population of the island in the event of danger. The walk along the ramparts on the west side of the city and along the seafront is a unique sight not to be missed!

A village full of history, an open-air museum

Saint-Martin-de-Ré also features narrow streets and alleyways that contain many historical treasures waiting to be discovered.

The half-timbered houses and private mansions such as the Maison de la Vinaterie (16th century), the hospital apothecary (18th century) and the Renaissance Hôtel de Clerjotte, which today houses the Ernest Cognacq museum devoted to the history of the island of Ré, are all evidence of this.

Stroll around the port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré

Continue your exploration around the marina, one of the largest on the island, alongside that of Ars-en-Ré. Here, you can meander from terrace to terrace, meeting the few fishermen who sell their fish directly on the quays, and observing the comings and goings of pleasure boats in the port. Don’t leave without having tasted an ice cream at La Martinière, the famous ice cream parlour. More than a tradition, it is an institution in Saint-Martin-de-Ré!

And for photographers, take a look at the Observatory Bell Tower of the church of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. From the terrace, you have a superb view over the village and the sea.
