When camping on the Ile de Ré, all roads lead to La Couarde-sur-Mer! Located in the heart of the island, this small village will seduce you with its calm and authenticity, whether you want to relax, go hiking or are a water sports fan.
A charming little village
10 km from the 5-star Le Cormoran campsite, La Couarde is a typical Ile de Ré village. In summer, life in the town centres around the bandstand where locals and holidaymakers meet in a festive and friendly atmosphere. And then there’s the market held every day from mid-June to mid-September.
If you are curious, go in search of all the sundials that adorn the facades and walls of the old houses – an opportunity to meander through in the maze of narrow streets lined with white houses with their green shutters and in the quiet alleys decorated with hollyhocks. Further on, in the Goisil channel (named after the nearby salt marsh), is a picturesque little port, the starting point for a lovely, bucolic walk to the Breton channel.
Beaches and water sports in La Couarde
Ile de Ré is a wonderful destination for nautical and water sports enthusiasts, and La Couarde-sur-Mer is no exception. You can register your children for a sailing course organised by the Centre Nautique Couardais du Goisil (CNCG), one of the island’s four French Sailing Schools. In summer, the team even offers free first-time catamaran, dinghy and optimist sailing for children and teenagers. A great opportunity!
On Peu Ragot beach is the “Les Dauphins” Sailing School run by Antoine Albeau, the 25 times world windsurfing champion. So this is definitely the right school to perfect your windsurfing, wakeboarding or water skiing, or even go for a tubing ride.
Based on Les Prises beach, the “Ile de Ré Voile” sailing school, located on the Route d’Ars, also organises catamaran, funboard, paddle and kayak lessons
At Boutillon beach, at the western end of La Couarde, in the direction of Ars-en-Ré, two schools offer kitesurfing lessons (Philovent and Révasion).
Finally, if you want to discover the joys of paddleboard, the campsite recommends the “Sup Evasion” SUP school located on Les Prises beach. On the programme: juniors courses, discovery sessions, private lessons… As for surfing enthusiasts, they will prefer La Pergola beach, at the southern end of La Couarde.
